HONOLULU, Hawaii — The North Texas basketball team claimed the 2018 Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic with a 68-51 win late Sunday night over Hawaii.
The Mean Green won all three games in the classic in route to the title and improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1990.Â
Junior guard Ryan Woolridge was the Classic's MVP. He played all 40 minutes on Sunday and finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists, a day after he dropped 22 points against Portland in a 78-73 win.Â
Freshman guard Umoja Gibson and sophomore forward Zachary Simmons were also named to the all-tournament team.Â
"I love the way our guys are playing for each other," head coach Grant McCasland said. "Our guys executed the scout and they played for each other. I love this team's effort and intelligence."
North Texas jumped on the Rainbow Warriors, taking a 15-4 lead in the first eight minutes of the game, which set the tone and gave the Mean Green a cushion and momentum. UNT used its physical and smart defense to force 17 Hawaii turnovers, which it turned into 26 points.
The Mean Green will face next Texas A&M-Commerce at the Super Pit on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
