DENTON – Continuing a seven-match stretch away from home, the North Texas volleyball team is set to compete in the ASICS Classic, hosted by CSU Northridge and Pepperdine Aug. 31-Sept. 2.
The Mean Green (3-1) play CSUN (1-2) at 8 p.m. Friday in Northridge, Calif., before heading out to the Pacific Coast to face Pepperdine (1-2) and Idaho (2-1) in Malibu on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
UNT was swept in its only meeting with CSUN in 1992 and has never faced Pepperdine in program history. The Mean Green are 0-10 all-time against Idaho, losing the last meeting in Boise in five sets.
Dating back to Sept. 17, 2016, North Texas hasn't lost a regular-season tournament match, winning 16 straight matches while only dropping four sets.
After winning nine-straight sets and claiming the North Texas Invitational title to open the season, the Mean Green went on the road to No. 12 Baylor, losing in four sets.
Sophomore Valerie Valerian and freshman Rhett Robinson led the team with 11 kills each, and Robinson tied Miranda Youmans with a team-high six blocks. Valerian added 13 digs for her first double-double.
Valerian and Robinson were among three players to take home Conference USA weekly awards as Valerian was named Offensive Player of the Week and Robinson was named co-Freshman of the Week.
Senior Karley York, who ranks in the top-25 in the nation in assists (149) and assists per set (11.46), took home her third Setter of the Week award after averaging 12.67 per set in the opening weekend.
York has played a vital role in UNT's efficient offense, whose .309 attack percentage stands as 10th-best in Division I. CSUN and Pepperdine rank 292nd and 296th, respectively, in opponent hit percentage.
Mean Green fans can watch the match against CSUN on BigWest.tv and the Pepperdine match can be seen on the West Coast Conference Network.
