ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – North Texas track and field opened Day One of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational hosted by New Mexico led by top finishers Brock Hottel in pole vault and Breanna Eckels in long jump.
Hottel, who set a Mean Green program record last week at the Kansas State Invitational, earned second place at this week's invite with a vault of 5.05 meters. Eckels finished third in long jump with a mark of 5.96 meters.
Davonye Jones was just outside the top eight in the 200-meter dash as the first UNT runner to cross the line in ninth place. Alia Holmes ran a 24.12 in the 200 for a sixth-place finish to guide North Texas.
Director of track and field Carl Sheffield said, "Not a bad start to the weekend. I was impressed with Holmes today. It was a pretty good time for only her second collegiate 200-meter race on a banked track."
Ashlynn Smart was the high finisher for UNT in the women's weight throw with a toss of 14.86 meters for 15thplace, while Karl Sralla concluded in third at 15.32 meters to lead the men.
