ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – North Texas track and field wrapped up the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational Saturday hosted by New Mexico at the Albuquerque Convention Center as several Mean Green placed among the strong competition.
"I was really impressed with our overall effort this weekend," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "I feel like we stepped up and competed well against the competition. Our team has to learn to execute against teams that may be better at certain events. This weekend only helps us prepare for future competition."
Joseph Squire was the top finisher for the UNT men in third place in 60-meter hurdles with a personal record time of 8.11. In shot put, Chris Samaniego concluded in fifth with a throw of 14.41 meters. Darien Porter ran a 6.89 in the 60-meter dash for sixth place, and Florian Lussy landed in seventh with a time of 2:00.37 in the 800 meters.
For the women, Alia Holmes came in fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.55. Mary Piercy earned fourth place in pole vault at 3.65 meters, and the 4x400 squad of Artesha Richardson, Lauryn McCollum, Lyric Choice, and Bria Williams finished sixth.
"Next week's meet at Texas Tech will be another opportunity for us to experience competition against national caliber teams," Sheffield said.
The Mean Green will head to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Classic Jan. 25-26.
