FORT WORTH — The North Texas women's tennis team is back on the road on Friday but this time it'll be just a short drive down I-35W as they take on TCU at 1 p.m. They then will quickly turn around and host UTEP on Saturday for a noon match start.
The Mean Green (2-2) are undefeated so far in the young season against teams from Texas, most recently beating Lamar last Saturday 6-1 and early Abilene Christian 7-0 on Jan. 15. Both of those matches were at home.
"I am excited about the way we are practicing and preparing," said head coach Sujay Lama. "The energy and intensity has been outstanding. We have a great opportunity against a talented TCU team. We are looking forward to the challenge. It should be great match."
On Friday, UNT senior Tamuna Kutubidze, the No. 45 nationally ranked player, will take her 4-0 singles record and lead the Mean Green into Horned Frogs (4-0) territory. TCU also beat Lamar 6-1 and ACU 7-0 earlier this season. They also have wins over New Mexico and McNeese State. They've yet to play a road match.
In its two wins this year, North Texas has won 10 of its 12 played singles matches in straight sets, including a pair of 6-1, 6-1 wins last week versus Lamar.
Also in both of those wins, North Texas dominated the doubles play, winning all six of the matches. Seniors Minying Liang and Maria Kononova are undefeated this year at the No. 1 position in the doubles lineup at 4-0.
A huge boost in the Mean Green lineup has been the play of sophomore Nidhi Surapaneni and junior Alexandra Heczey. The duo each has three singles wins on the year and have competed their way into the doubles lineup where they aren't paired together but with their respective partners have picked up wins.
A senior class that has won more matches than any other in program history, the Mean Green will throughout this season lean heavy on their leadership, especially on the road and quick turn around matches such as this weekend's.
"We'll have a short turn around to play a conference opponent and it will be very important for us to be mentally and physically ready for the back-to-back play," Lama explained.
Saturday will mark the first time since 2014 the Mean Green have played UTEP. The last time they met, the Mean Green beat the Miners 4-1 in Denton. That was in the middle of a long winning streak for UNT that included wins over Kansas State and a road win over TCU.
For fans looking to make the trip to TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center and Bartzen Varsity Courts, it is located at 3609 Bellaire Drive North Fort Worth, TX 76129.
