HATTIESBURG, Miss – North Texas volleyball will travel away from home for the first time in Conference USA play, beginning with a match on Friday at 6 p.m. against Southern Mississippi.
The Mean Green (7-7, 1-1) will then face Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m. on Sunday to wrap the road trip. North Texas wrapped a five-game home stand with a 3-0 loss to No. 21 Rice. Thursday will mark the first road game since Sept. 14. The Mean Green are 1-1 in true away games this season while having a 2-2 mark in neutral site games, all of which have been away from the Mean Green Volleyball Center.
Head coach Andrew Palileo knows the challenge of getting away from home for North Texas, especially with the home court advantage the small gym and low ceiling the Mean Green Volleyball Center provides.
Both Southern Miss (1-14, 0-2) and Louisiana Tech (11-4, 1-0) play in the same arena as their basketball programs providing for a larger venue.
"There is an advantage for the home team because we are used to the smaller venue," Palileo said. "But there's also a challenge in disrupting the routine the players have gotten into. Travel is just challenging, you try to get into routines so you try to stay as close to that as you can."
Southern Miss picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday in a five-set win over Alabama State. LA Tech is riding a four-game win streak winning 12 of their last 15 sets. The last meeting between North Texas and Southern Miss was a 3-0 win on Nov. 10, 2018.The Mean Green have won the last three matches making the all-time series 7-7. North Texas is 2-4 on the road against the Golden Eagles.
The Mean Green and the Lady Techsters last met on Oct. 12, 2018, a 3-0 win for North Texas. North Texas is 5-1 on the road against LA Tech. LA Tech will get to face Florida Atlantic on Friday.
Palileo is more focused on what the Mean Green can do on their side of the net.
"We talk about resetting quicker," Palileo said. "Getting into position, getting into your base and that's just one of those things we need to be better at. Right now people are reacting instead of being proactive. We just need to read the game quicker."
Both games will carry live stats. Live coverage can be found on Twitter by following @MeanGreenVB.
