DENTON — Led by the North Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, UNT Athletics had 156 student-athletes from all 16 sports participate in a total of 260 hours of volunteer service from Nov. 9 through Nov. 14.
The Mean Green student-athletes volunteered their time at: the Denton Mobile Food Pantry, Salvation Army Homeless Shelter, Salvation Army Angel Tree Toy Drive, assisted in a campus beautification project with Keep Denton Beautiful and played bingo with residents of the Denton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
The Mean Green track and field team volunteered with the Women Running With Authority's 5K. Women Running With Authority is an organization that serves to enhance the quality of life for women who are living through the challenges of a terminal diagnosis. Members of the football team spoke at a local elementary school assembly on World Kindness Day.
"It's important to do your part, have a positive impact and serve the community you live in," said North Texas soccer senior captain and S.A.A.C. co-chair Dominique James. "It feels good knowing we had such high participation from all teams and that our university has so many student-athletes who want to give back and be that positive impact."
