DENTON – The University of North Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has joined the National Education Association's Read Across America initiative.
As part of SAAC's community service efforts, Mean Green student-athletes are promoting literacy by reading for elementary school classrooms. This year, these readings will take place virtually with the student-athletes reading in front of a camera as the book's pages are shown on the screen. These recorded videos have been distributed to Denton Independent School District classrooms for teachers to share during instruction. The videos have also been made available online here.
The National Education Association (NEA) launched the Read Across America initiative in 1998 in order to celebrate reading year-round. The program motivates children and teens to read using events, partnerships and resources that are inclusive of classrooms across the country. While the NEA celebrates reading year-round, March 2nd has been designated as "Read Across America Day."
