UNT Celebrates National Student-Athlete Day

DENTON — On Monday, North Texas Athletics celebrated National Student-Athlete Day, which is recognized nationwide every April 6.
With 352 student-athletes, the Mean Green have a lot to be proud of. In honor of the special day UNT asked the families of all its current student-athletes to send in a short video message addressing their respective student-athlete with what they are most proud of.

ACADEMICS
- Mean Green student-athletes combined to post a GPA of 3.01 during the 2019 fall semester. It was the first time in over six years that a semester GPA for all UNT student-athletes was over 3.0.
- Scholarship student-athletes also improved their cumulative GPA to 3.06 in the fall, which is the highest it has been since Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker took over in 2016.
- 205 of the 352 student-athletes earned a term GPA of 3.0 or better in the fall.
- Eleven of the 14 teams had a GPA of 3.0 or better in the fall, and the volleyball, tennis and women's golf team each had their entire rosters post a GPA of 3.0 or better. The women's golf team led the way with a team GPA of 3.74, marking the fifth consecutive semester that head coach Mike Akers' squad has improved their team GPA.
- In the fall, the men's cross country team (3.48) and the men's track and field team (3.07) each recorded their best academic semester since it began being tracked.
- There were 42 Mean Green student-athletes on the 2019 fall President's List, which recognizes students with a perfect 4.0 GPA. There were 77 UNT athletes on the Dean's List (3.5-3.599) and 86 on the AD Honor Roll (3.0-3.499).
- North Texas student-athletes have volunteered 280 hours of community service hours this year.
- UNT student-athletes volunteered at the Denton Mobile Food Pantry, The Salvation Army Angel Tree Toy Sorting and Homeless Shelter Cleanup, Campus Beautification and played Bingo with the residents of Denton Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center to name a few.
- The women's track and field program assisted at the Women Running with Authority 5k fundraiser for terminally ill patients.
- Football student-athletes spoke to an elementary school assembly on World Kindness Day.
- The women's golf, women's basketball, softball and tennis programs had the highest percentage of volunteering with over 93 percent of their respective rosters participating in community service.
- Nine programs had over 50-percent participation in volunteering.
ATHLETICS
- This year the North Texas men's basketball and women's soccer programs won Conference USA championships. Both championship clinching wins came at home in Denton.
- The Mean Green softball team beat two top-10 nationally ranked opponents this season.
- Twenty-four North Texas student-athletes earned all-conference honors, including Javion Hamlet being named the C-USA Player of the Year, Dominique James earning C-USA Defensive Player of the Year honor and Kelsey Brann being named C-USA Goalkeeper of the Year.
- North Texas women's soccer reached the NCAA Tournament.
- Sixteen student-athletes earned player of the week honors.
- UNT's Florian Lussey reached the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
