Walker, Lussy Set Records On Day One Of C-USA’s

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Haley Walker established a new North Texas best in the weight throw, and Florian Lussy set a record in the 5,000-meter run at the 2019 Air Force Reserve Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday hosted by UAB, as several Mean Green placed and qualified for Sunday's finals inside the Birmingham Crossplex.
Walker's throw of 17.76 meters broke Ngozi Nweke's toss in 2016 by .06 for seventh place, and Lussy's time of 14:22.39 improved upon the 14:26.71 set by Mike Lowe that same season to earn him fourth. Brock Hottel placed second in pole vault with a mark of 5.18 as the high finisher for UNT, and Breanna Eckels took fourth in long jump with a mark of 5.90. The men's distance medley team of Alex Cleveland, Yannick Kalidas, Tim Jones and Andrew Cobos secured fifth place in 10:20.46, and the women finished seventh with Cassidy Adams, Lyric Choice, Darrian Johnson and Aubrey Schmidt running a collective 12:23.94.
Five Mean Green will race Sunday in the finals. Darien Porter ran the 60-meter dash in 6.82 seconds to finish second and qualify, and Alia Holmes came in seventh with a time of 7.56. Holmes also will also compete in the 200 as she clocked a 24.17 as the seventh runner to finish in the preliminaries.
Joseph Squire came in fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.02, and Rea Iseli clinched the eighth and final qualifying spot in the mile at 5:02.45. In the mile, Cobos ran a personal best 4:18.28 and Cleveland came in 10that 4:21.09.
The championships conclude Sunday with field events beginning at 11 a.m. following by running at 1 p.m.
