PLANO — Coming off a 4-0 win over the Pac-12's Arizona, the Mean Green tennis team has reached the middle of its spring season and is playing its best tennis of the season.
For its 11th match of the 21-match regular season, North Texas will host Northwestern State on Friday at 1 p.m.
Due to impending weather, Friday's match has been moved to Life Time Fitness in Plano. The indoor courts are located at 7100 Preston Rd, Plano, TX 75024.
"Northwestern State is a very good team and well coached," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "I have a lot of respect for the coaching staff there."
North Texas (6-4) has won four of its last five with the only loss being a narrow 4-3 loss to Kansas State last Friday. The Wildcats reached the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
Northwestern State comes to North Texas also on a hot streak.
After losing their season-opener, the Lady Demons have rallied off six straight wins, including a 7-0 shutout of LSU-Alexander in their most recent match. Northwestern State is 1-1 on the year in road matches, with the one loss coming at Tulane in the season-opener.
Friday will mark the Lady Demons' second match this year in the state of Texas. They beat Texas State on Feb. 10, 4-2.
As for the Mean Green, three of the their last four wins have been shutouts and the only win that wasn't a shutout was a 6-1 win over Sam Houston State, which was at Life Time Fitness in Plano.
Friday's match against Northwestern State (6-1) is also the last of a six-match home stand for the Mean Green who next week travel to Miami to face Marshall and FIU. North Texas has played seven matches in this early season at home, which is the most they've played before the month of March under 13-year head coach Sujay Lama. So far this season, North Texas has put together a 6-1 record in home matches.
"We are finally hitting our stride and this match against Northwestern State is very important to continue building the confidence and momentum we have," Lama said.
On Wednesday, North Texas received three Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings.
Senior Tamuna Kutubidze earned a No 57 national singles ranking. Kutubidze and her doubles partner Maria Kononova are undefeated on the year and remained in the top 30 as they came in at No. 26 on Wednesday.
Also earning a national ranking for North Texas was Minying Liang who came in at No. 114.
Friday's match will also be a good test for the Mean Green who will face four straight conference opponents following Northwestern State, including defending champs FIU.
