ABILENE – Lyric Choice captured the 100-meter hurdles title for North Texas on the final day of the Wes Kittley Invitational hosted by Abilene Christian Saturday.
"Not a bad opening meet for our outdoor season," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "With the weather playing havoc with our training this week, I think they competed hard today."
Choice ran a 14.31 for her first place finish and also took fifth in the 200 in a time of 24.91, one place behind teammate Jayda Dixon who came in with a 28.82. Lauryn McCollum seized seventh place with a personal best time of 25.10, and Taylor Blackshire came in next at 25.11. Dixon came away with a personal record in the 100 at 12.08 seconds for seventh place.
Second place finishers included Cassidy Adams in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:22.86) and Valencia Bullock in long jump (5.52 meters). Denver Mims took third after Bullock with a personal-best mark of 5.33. Jennifer White clocked an 11:59.21 in steeplechase for fourth place.
Darrian Johnson ran a 2:19.14 in the 800 for third-place honors, while the 4x400 team of McCollum, Kayla McDonald, Johnson, and Dixon crossed the line in 3:56.43 for fourth place. Jaleisa Shaffer finished in fourth with a 14.53-meter throw in shot put, Bullock took fifth in triple jump with a mark of 11.45, and Sydney Salinas concluded in seventh in pole vault at 3.76.
"The team that competed today needed to get some outdoor competitions under their belt. It was a good meet for the collegiate experience. We have been really excited about our training improvements so far this year. We are really looking forward to the upcoming season," Sheffield said.
Cody Bullard and Andrew Cobos were the high finishers for the Mean Green men with second place honors. Bullard registered 5.00 meters in pole vault, and Cobos ran a 4:01.74 in the 1,500-meter run. Tim Jones concluded two spots behind Cobos in a time of 4:02.96.
Coming in third was Abdon Campbell in the 100-meter dash (10.77 seconds), Brock Hottel in pole vault (4.85 meters), and Yannick Kalidas in long jump (5.88).
