North Texas Aims To Build Momentum At UTA

ARLINGTON — The North Texas tennis team faces its Dallas-Fort Worth rival UT Arlington on Wednesday at the Mavericks' Tennis Center at 2:00 p.m. CT.
The Mean Green (9-9) are just three matches from the 2019 Conference USA Tournament in Houston. UTA (12-5) will be a good competition for UNT as UTA is riding high on a three-match winning streak. However, North Texas, who has played the Mavericks every season since 2013, has beaten them in three straight seasons.
"This is the time to try to build positive momentum headed into the conference tournament," said North Texas head coach Sujay Lama. "The goal is playing well top to bottom in both doubles and singles at the same time."
North Texas' top of the lineup has been all-conference this season and its seniors, Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze, are on the verge of being the program's first four-time selections. They are a combined 23-10 on the year in singles and 13-4 over the last 10 matches. The consistency has carried over in doubles as they pair at the top of the doubles lineup and are the No. 27 national ranked doubles team and have been ranked as high as No. 19 this year. They own a 9-1 overall record in doubles and have carried a team that has won 63 percent of all its doubles matches and 79 percent of its conference doubles matches.
Junior Ivana. Babic has added consistency to the bottom of the Mean Green singles lineup, posting a personal-best 9-2 record.
Lama and the Mean Green will aim to continue that success on Wednesday but also will look to start and build momentum in the middle of its lineup.
UTA features three players who have won 10 or more dual singles matches and has two more women with nine dual singles wins. The Mavericks are best in the middle of their lineup. Their No. 4 and No. 5 players in their singles lineup are a combined 22-7. Furthermore, their No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams are a combined 19-11.
A complete team win on Wednesday is what UNT is aiming for and would give the Mean Green serious momentum headed into the final week of the regular season.
"UTA always plays tough at home and we have to come out with energy from the beginning," Lama said.
