SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Aneesa Scott of North Texas became the first Mean Green to advance at the NCAA West Preliminaries since the 2016 season by securing a spot in the 400-meter dash quarterfinals Thursday at Hornet Stadium.
Scott finished fourth in her heat, just outside of the automatic qualifying top three finishers, in a time of 53.76 seconds to grab the 22ndof the available 24 spots in Friday's quarterfinals. In 2016, Chastity Stewart (100-meter and 400-meter hurdles) and Collin Heard (200-meter dash) also made it past the first round.
"I was excited for Aneesa advancing to the next round," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "She didn't run her best race, but she gets another chance tomorrow to try and qualify for the finals in Austin."
Kristyn Archuleta began the competition for the Mean Green with her third career appearance in the prelims. She recorded her furthest mark on attempt number one at 43.43 meters and then threw 41.07 on her second try and 42.74 on the final throw to conclude in 32nd place.
Brock Hottel easily cleared his opening attempt of 4.81 meters on pole vault but was unsuccessful in three tries at the next height to finish in 37th.
Breanna Eckels entered the long jump for the third time as a member of the Mean Green. She was successful on her first jump and registered a mark of 5.71 meters but fouled on the next two attempts for a 38th place finish.
In the first round of the 100-meter dash, Darien Porter was just short of qualifying for the quarterfinals as he came in fourth in his heat at 10.49 seconds. The final spot claimed in the advancing 24 runners was ran in 10.45.
"Today was not one of our best days this season," Sheffield said. Archuleta, Eckles and Hottel have had better days. This is a tough region. A lot of the country's best times were posted by athletes in the West region, and it's always a good thing to compete against the best.
"Zion Hill and Haley Walker compete tomorrow, and both have had good practices leading up to the preliminary rounds. Joseph Squire also has a good chance of advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal round of 24."
The Mean Green begin competition tomorrow at 2 p.m. CST with Walker in discus and Hill in javelin.
