SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The men's 4x100-meter relay team from North Texas came up .01 seconds short of advancing to the NCAA Championships at the West Preliminaries Saturday inside Hornet Stadium to conclude the Mean Green's participation in the meet.
The team of Darien Porter, Davonye Jones, Antonio Delacruz and Abdon Campbell clocked a time of 40.00, just shy of a season-best 39.96, to take fourth in the first heat. In the third and final heat, UNT was ousted by a 39.99 performance to conclude in 13thspot, with the top 12 teams advancing to the finals held in Austin June 5-8.
"There are no words to describe that feeling when the results came up on the board," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "For these young freshmen and sophomores to come so close is tough. We preach how close our events are, even in Conference USA. I'm sad for them, but I'm glad they got a chance to see and feel it for themselves."
Throughout the prelims, the Mean Green finished higher than their incoming rankings in seven of their 10 events.
"This was a fantastic experience for all our athletes. They'll return to this competition with a different mindset. The close finishes say a lot about the growth of our team. Experience is such a good teacher," Sheffield said.
