SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Aneesa Scott and Joseph Squire both narrowly missed advancing by fractions of a second in sprints at the NCAA West Preliminaries Friday as the Mean Green completed Day 2 at Hornet Stadium.
Â
Scott set up in the blocks for the 200-meter dash two hours after completing the 400 and produced an impressive time of 23.87. She was just shy grabbing the third automatic qualifying spot in the heat, and her time was less than three-tenths of a second and six spots from making the top 24 to advance.
Â
Squire came up just short of moving on from the first round in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.12 seconds, just outside the cutoff of 14.05.Â
Â
Zion Hill entered the javelin throw as the Mean Green's highest-ranking competitor with an 18th-place ranking. His first attempt on the day was 62.58 meters followed by an improvement to 65.94 on try number two. He registered a 61.55 on the final attempt and was in fourth place heading into the third flight, but an assembly of throws over 67 meters pushed Hill to 16thplace, missing the finals cut by four spots.
Â
Haley Walker opened the day's competition for the Mean Green in discus with a showing in the first flight. Her initial throw sailed just outside the left sector before she came back with a mark of 48.55 meters on her second attempt. She recorded a 47.25 on her final throw to finish in 36thplace.Â
Â
Scott made her appearance in the 400-meter quarterfinals after her qualifying performance Friday and finished in a time of 55.17 seconds.Â
The men's 4x100-meter relay team competes Saturday at 8:15 p.m. CST.
