DENTON — The North Texas soccer team, which received six top 25 votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, heads into the final weekend of non-conference play with two matches with significant meaning.
The Mean Green (4-2) host Grambling (3-3-1) Friday night at 7 p.m. aiming to maintain their 21-match home unbeaten stretch alive. A streak that is just four matches shy of a program record.
On Sunday at 1 p.m., UNT travels to SEC power Alabama (3-2-1) for a game that will be streamed on SEC Network+. The Mean Green and Crimson Tied played to a 1-1 draw last season in Denton. North Texas is 6-5-1 all-time versus the SEC.
UNT heads into this final non-conference weekend playing what head coach John Hedlund believes has been the team's best so far. Despite giving up a goal early at No. 14 Memphis last Friday, the Mean Green from there on out shutdown the potent nationally ranked Tigers' offense. Two days after their 1-0 loss at Memphis, the Tigers beat Mississippi State 4-0 on the road.
Then on Sunday, UNT got back to its winning ways with a 3-0 shutout win at Incarnate Word.
Despite not getting the result in Memphis that they'd prefer, Hedlund returned to Denton with a positive feeling especially with many of his newcomers.
North Texas entered the 2019 season with 15 newcomers on the roster, by far Hedlund's largest incoming recruiting class. With many new people the challenges of getting situated and playing a style that would utilize the team's immense depth the best took some time. Not to mention getting the 11 freshmen comfortable with college soccer lifestyle also took some time.
While returners Berklee Peters and Logan Bruffett from the start have been the ignition to the Mean Green offense and statistically are leading the way, six of the next eight points leaders for UNT are newcomers and all of whom have seen their roles increase over the past week.
And after playing well at Memphis and in San Antonio at UIW other coaches around the nation took notice too as the Mean Green jumped up in the rankings.
Positive results this weekend will only further what the back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back conference champion head coach is starting to see in his squad.
Friday's match is UNT Faculty & Staff Appreciation Game. Members of the UNT faculty and staff receive two free tickets to Friday night's match versus Grambling.
