DENTON – After an 0-3 weekend at the Mustang Challenge hosted by Cal Poly, North Texas volleyball looks to get back on track at the first annual Wildcat Classic hosted by Abilene Christian. It will be the last road tournament of the season for the Mean Green.
The Wildcats (1-5) host North Texas (2-4), Cal State Fullerton (5-1), and Prairie View A&M (0-8) in Abilene across Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Mean Green will face off with Cal State Fullerton at 3 p.m. on Friday before a Saturday back-to-back doubleheader to round out play with ACU at 2 p.m. and Prairie View A&M at 5 p.m.
Head coach Andrew Palileo has seen progress from his team in practice this week.
"We've worked on some of the things we've been working on since the beginning of the year," Palileo said. "It looks like it's coming together for this week. We're very focused on what we're doing on our side of the net."
Palileo sits just two wins shy of 400 career wins. He is currently 398-274 as a head coach between four stops. He will be the only head coach in Conference USA to reach 400 wins while coaching in the conference. He currently holds a 122-82 record in his seventh season as head coach.
Despite what some might consider a slow start, the Mean Green have found success blocking at the net. North Texas averages 2.26 blocks a set, which ranks fourth in C-USA. Sophomore Sarah Haeussler and freshman Alysha Johnson are leading the way blocking. Haeussler leads the team with 25 total blocks, Johnson is second with 24.
North Texas' ability at the net will be key in Abilene along with getting an offense which ranks second-to-last in C-USA in kills going.
"We want to make sure we are confident in what we're doing," Palileo said. "We need to understand what we are doing in every facet of the game. The offense, defense and transition. We've done a better job this week and they've focused in, hopefully it will pay off for us."
