SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – (RV) Cal Poly defeated North Texas in straight-sets (15-25, 10-25, 25-9) Thursday night.
The Mustangs (1-3) were energized by their first chance to play at home. The Mean Green (2-2) open the road schedule with a loss. The Mustangs won 14 out of the last 16 points to seal the match.
"Our first touch wasn't as consistent," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "We started out early passing the ball well and not hitting well. Then we got a little shaky. Our first touch was off all night."
North Texas struggled serving the ball racking up eight service errors. The Mustangs excelled at serving with nine aces. Lea Unger and Maia Dvoracek provded three each.
"They served well but we have to be able to adapt to when things like that happen," Palileo said. "When you can't pass the ball and that first touch struggles, your offense gets predictable."
Valerie Valerian led with eight kills. Kaliegh Skopal pitched in 17 assists. Kailyn O'Neal, Miranda Youmans and Avery McCrillis saw their first action of the season. O'Neal provided two assists. North Texas returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday against San Jose State.
"We've got to do a better job as coaches to prepare our team better," Palileo said. "I feel if we can take care of our first touch, play ti better and not end up being so predictable we will be better tomorrow."
