SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After a 2-1 start at the North Texas Invitational, Mean Green volleyball hits the road to continue tournament play to open the 2019 season.
North Texas (2-1) faces (RV) Cal Poly (0-3), San Jose State (1-2) and Wichita State (2-1) in the Mustang Challenge hosted by Cal Poly. North Texas faced Cal Poly and Wichita State last season, falling to the Mustangs 3-0 on Sept. 15. The Mean Green faced the Shockers three times in 2018, falling in the regular season on Sept. 14 before picking up back-to-back wins on Nov. 14 and Nov. 30.
The Mean Green will play three matches across Thursday-Saturday with a match each day. The play opens on Thursday at 9 p.m. with Cal Poly and continues Friday at 6 p.m. with San Jose State. North Texas wraps play on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Wichita State.
The last meeting between North Texas and Wichita State was a 3-1 win for North Texas in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in 2018.
The Mustangs opened the season in the NVCA Coaches Poll at No. 23., but fell in all three matches in the opening weekend. The Mustangs won just two sets across 11 total, both set wins coming against Utah. Cal Poly now sits just outside the Top 25, still recieving votes.
San Jose State and North Texas have faced off just once – a 3-2 win for San Jose State on Sept. 3, 2016. The Spartans picked up a win against Montana to close the opening weekend after two-straight losses.
The Mean Green got a solid look at just how deep they could possibly be with its three matches to begin the season. Junior setter Kaliegh Skopal was key, picking up MVP honors at the North Texas Invite with 113 assists.
She provided solid service to outsides Valerie Valerian, Rhett Robinson and Barbara Teakell. Sophomore Sarah Haeussler was key at the net with 16 blocks in the opening weekend. Haeussler also added on 28 kills.
All matches will carry live stats, and live tweets will be featured on @MeanGreenVB on Twitter.
