DENTON -- One of the unique characteristics of the 2019-20 North Texas men's and women's basketball teams is its connections to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Through men's assistant coach Jareem Dowling, the Mean Green is the only school in the country with three Virgin Island natives. Dowling, a U.S.V.I. native and assistant coach for the national team program, helped bring women's basketball post Anisha George and men's basketball forwards Shakeem Alcindor and Jahmiah Simmons to North Texas. Since coming to Denton, the four of them have worn their U.S.V.I. culture with pride and built a diverse community within the program. All national team players, the three student-athletes along with Dowling have helped grow the game of basketball in their home country.
