AUSTIN – New additions were made to the UNT women's golf record book on Sunday as the team concluded play at the loaded Betsy Rawls Invitational.
The Mean Green finished sixth as a team but tied their best round in relation to par in program history – shooting a 5-under-par 283 to finish the tournament at 15-over and two shots back of fifth-place TCU.
But the day's highlight came from junior Katie Finley, who birdied her final hole to shoot a 7-under-par 65 and set a new program record for low round and low round in relation to par. Her 65 topped the previous record of 66, held by teammate Lauren Cox (2018-19) and Jackie Twamley Hellard (1988-89). Finley finished the day with eight birdies. She finished tied for 16th – a career-best finish – and Cox led the way, tying for eighth place at 3-under after a final-round 69.
"I'm very happy with the way the team bounced back in the final round," said Akers, after his team followed an opening-round 292 with a second-round 304 on Saturday. "It is very exciting to see Katie Finley break the school record. To have eight birdies on this golf course is just incredible. Lauren doubled her first hole but bounced back and managed to shoot 3-under on the day. We will continue to work hard and focus on becoming consistent through three rounds of play."
UNT was the only non-Big 12 team in the field, which featured several teams that ended last season ranked in the top 50 of GolfStat's national poll. The first rankings of the 2020-21 season are set to be released on Oct. 17.
