BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – North Texas cross country competed in the first Conference USA Championship event since last February as the teams raced at the 2020 C-USA Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships with three Mean Green earning All-Conference accolades at Veterans Park in Birmingham hosted by UAB Saturday.
The men finished fourth out of 11 teams with 110 points while the women concluded in ninth out of 13 with 181 points. Charlotte took home the men's title and Middle Tennessee women were crowned the champions as each recorded a team title of 31.
In the men's 8K, Alec Esposito ran a personal best 24:56.20 to finish 13th and garner second team all-conference honors. Caleb Bouchard came in 15th at 24:58.29 to attain third team accolades. Erika Barrett clocked a career best 22:20.44 in the women's 6K as the 18th finisher to earn a spot on the third team.
Matthew Morgan and Logan Mitchell came in 25th and 26th, respectively, with times of 25:26.47 and 25:35.00. Braden Lange concluded the course in 25:51.59 in 31st, and Mason Garner finished 35th in 26:00.04. Jack Beaumont started but did not finish the race.
"It wasn't a good day for either team," head coach Kevin Williams said. "The men tactically took themselves out of the race early. They were not aggressive at all, and you can't catch these teams running from behind."
Audrey Springer completed the race in 22:43.47 for 26th place, while Laurynn Hogan was 40th in 23:16.20. Katie Booth ran a 23:34.31 in the 49th spot, and Gwyneth Garcia was right behind her with a time of 23:36.09. Madelyn Taylor had a time of 23:40.02 to finish 54th, and Arianna Gonzales was timed at 25:17.85 for 76th.
"The women were in a really tight battle, and we lost what could have been a great performance. UAB in fifth place was not far ahead," Williams said.
