FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The North Texas men's basketball team fell 69-54 to Arkansas Saturday afternoon at the Bud Walton Arena.
The Mean Green (1-1) twice tied the Razorbacks (2-0) late in the first half but could never make the punch that put them over. Late in the first half, Arkansas went on a 10-0 run and grew the lead to as many as 13 before the half. In the second half, Arkansas used a 9-0 run to start the half to extend its lead. The Mean Green showed fight in the second half, going on runs of their own to cut the deficit but were unable to keep it going.
"This is on me," said head coach Grant McCasland. "We as coaches need to make sure the team is better prepared. I loved the fight they showed late but we have to do better."
Terence Lewis II led UNT in scoring with 12 points in 15 minutes of game time. The Mean Green newcomer was 4-of-7 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.
Arkansas' defense was havoc on the Mean Green offense as they forced 16 UNT turnovers, which turned into 20 points for the Razorbacks. They held Javion Hamlet in check. The North Texas point guard had 5 points. It was his lowest scoring output in 22 games.
The Mean Green return to Denton on Tuesday as they face Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m. at the Super Pit.
