AUSTIN – A scoring lull by North Texas in the second quarter combined with a 38-point scoring outburst from Texas in the third turned a close contest into a 106-69 road loss for the Mean Green Sunday inside the Frank Erwin Center.
UNT (1-1) kept with the Longhorns (2-0) by holding a lead late in the first and pulling within five midway through the second before Texas started to take control. Quincy Noble and Destiny Brooks each scored 12 points for UNT, and N'Yah Boyd and Summer Jones recorded 10. The Mean Green had trouble containing Preseason All- Big 12 selection Charli Collier of Texas who posted 44 points and 16 rebounds.
"Basketball is a possession game," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "I thought Texas was very good at getting to the free throw line and rebounding the ball today. Those two things gave them extra possessions and the opportunity to put points on the board."
Noble provided the first Mean Green offense of the game with a 3-pointer from the right wing and a driving layup for a 5-2 advantage. A three-point play by Texas put the Longhorns up 16-9 with four minutes remaining in the quarter, but an 11-3 UNT run capped by a Tommisha Lampkin bucket underneath handed the lead back to North Texas at 20-19.
Another three by Noble opened the second quarter to keep the Mean Green within a point at 24-23. The Longhorns took a 35-28 lead midway through until N'Yah Boyd knocked down a pair of free throws. Texas then scored eight unanswered before Charlene Shepherd put back her own miss to cut the Texas lead to 44-32, but a layup by the home team at the buzzer added another pair.
In the third, Boyd hit four from the line to keep North Texas in the game at 54-40, but a 13-0 run by the Longhorns had the Mean Green trailing by 27. Brooks rattled off seven straight, and Jones notched five with two minutes to play in the quarter.
"As we continue to grow as a team, I believe we will respond better to adversity and compete at our highest level for 40 minutes," Mitchell said. "It's what all great teams do. Together, we will get there!"
The Mean Green travel to Louisiana Dec. 4 for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
