SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS – North Texas women's basketball is scheduled to compete in the South Padre Island Classic Dec. 18-19. The Mean Green will first face UT Arlington Friday at 4 p.m. and Prairie View A&M Saturday at 1 p.m.
About the Mean Green
North Texas improved to 2-1 on the season with an 83-74 win at Louisiana Dec. 4. Following a loss at Texas Nov. 29 and a season-opening win over Tarleton Nov. 25. Redshirt sophomore Quincy Noble leads the team in scoring at 19.7 points. Sophomore N'Yah Boyd averages 10.3, sophomore Jazion Jackson adds 9.0, and senior Summer Jones and junior Charlene Shepherd each contribute 7.3. Redshirt senior Madi Townley is pulling down a team-high 8.7 boards, and Boyd dishes out 4.7 assists.
About the Lady Mavericks
UTA has dealt with four canceled contests but has managed to put together a record of 2-1, with both victories coming against Division II Lone Star Conference members Texas A&M-Commerce and St. Edward's, and the lone loss occurring at SFA. Shyia Smith leads the Mavs with 17.0 points per game. Bre Wickware averages 15.3 and Jordynn Hernandez adds 10.

The Mean Green (1-2, 0-0 C-USA) had five players score eight points each but zero hit double figures on a night when UT Arlington (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) had three players reach double-digits and another with nine points. UNT was outrebounded for the first time this season, by a 49-43 margin, and shot just 15-of-27 from the foul line.
UNT got eight points apiece from Anisha George, Jazion Jackson, Destinee McDowell, Charlene Shepherd and Summer Jones. George added a team-high nine rebounds, while Shepherd and Trena Mims each pulled down seven boards. George and McDowell entered the game averaging 18.5 and 14 points, respectively, but both got in foul trouble, and McDowell fouled out in the fourth quarter.
A Noble Start
Quincy Noble has already made a name for herself three games into her career with the Mean Green. The redshirt sophomore put up a career-high 30 points against Louisiana and knocked down five 3-pointers, the fifth-highest total ever recorded by a North Texas player. Noble made the most of her North Texas debut with a team-high 17 points in an 87-71 Mean Green season opening win over Tarleton Nov. 25, and against Texas Nov. 29, Noble had a team-high 12 points, including a pair of big 3-pointers, that kept the Mean Green in contention early.
Deep Improvement
The Mean Green struggled from the 3-point line last season by connecting on just 27.8 percent of their attempts, ranking them 300 of the 348 teams in NCAA Division I. So far in 2020-21, the team is hitting at a 42.9-percent clip to sit 13th-best in the nation and second in Conference USA. Saturday's opponent, PVAMU, leads the country at a 56.2-percent clip. Quincy Noble, Jazion Jackson and Maddie Cleary are each shooting at least 50-percent from deep.
Formidable Freshman
In her collegiate debut, freshman Tommisha Lampkin posted 12 points and seven rebounds in just 12 minutes of play in a season-opening win against Tarleton Nov. 25. The forward knocked down five of her six shots and both free throws. Against Texas Nov. 29, Lampkin held her own underneath with two field goals and four rebounds. In the two contests, she averaged eight points, 5.5 boards and hit 70-percent of her shots.

Noble's career-high included five 3-pointers on her 11-of-17 shooting. Madison Townley compiled a double-double of 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, and Jazion Jackson recorded 14 points, a career-tying eight boards, three assists and three steals.
