Freshman's Breakout Day Puts UNT In Good Shape

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The North Texas women's golf team opened play at the ICON Invitational at The Woodlands Country Club on Monday and sit in seventh place after two rounds of play, thanks to a 12-stroke improvement between Round 1 and Round 2.
The Mean Green were led by freshman Emilie Ricaud and sophomore Audrey Tan, who are tied for 19th at 2-over par for the tournament after Tan shot a 1-under 71 in Round 2 and Ricaud posted an even-par 72 in the afternoon round. Sophomore Patricia Sinolungan also shot a 71 in Round 2 and is tied for 27th at 3-over for the tournament.
"We did not have any low scores in Round 1 but did not shoot ourselves out of it," UNT head coach Michael Akers said. "The second round was solid. When you throw out a 2-over, you know the team is deep. Emilie certainly had a great day. I really like the energy she has and her demeanor."
North Texas climbed two spots on the leaderboard in the afternoon round and is one shot back of No. 32 Houston, five of No. 37 Texas A&M and seven of No. 1 Texas. The Mean Green are three shots up on No. 23 Texas Tech and eight up on No. 20 Virginia Tech heading into the final round on Tuesday, which begins at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start.
The Mean Green will be paired with Tulsa and No. 23 Texas Tech.
"We are right where we want to be heading into the final round," Akers said. "An under-par round (Tuesday) will really go a long way to improving our national ranking."
