HUNTSVILLE, Texas — One of the hottest teams in Texas, the North Texas tennis team, takes its perfect 4-0 record on the road for its first road trip of the 2020 season.
The Mean Green (4-0) face Sam Houston State (4-1) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and then head west to face Arizona on Friday and Kansas State in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday.
"We are focused on the process and seeking improvement," said head coach Sujay Lama. "Road matches give us more opportunities to come together and bond."
The very young Mean Green team that features five newcomers has come together quickly less than a month into season.
North Texas has dominated the opening four matches of the season. They have now won 24 of 28 possible points and finished 3-0 against Southland Conference teams this season.
Junior Nidhi Surapaneni has led her young North Texas squad. Surapaneni is a perfect 4-0 in singles and in doubles she's been paired with newcomer Maria Ponomareva and those two are also a perfect 4-0 in doubles.
North Texas is just a couple days removed from its most narrow victory but still a dominate win over a well coached team.
UNT who is ranked No. 86 in the nation, beat Northwestern State 5-2 on Saturday for its first 4-0 start in over 14 years. On Saturday, the Mean Green were led by a variety of players but freshman Sophia Hummel cruised past her opponent to a 6-0, 6-1. Lama called her performance "the best since she arrived in the fall."
In total, three singles victories on Saturday by North Texas were won by Mean Green newcomers. They'll need a complete performance on this road trip as this will be the team's most challenging stretch of matches early into the year.
