DENTON — The North Texas women's basketball team dominated the UTEP Miners in the second half to end the regular season with a 68-58 win at home on Saturday.
Led by senior Anisha George, UNT (12-19, 6-12 C-USA) outscored UTEP by 11 in the second half by shooting 50 percent from the field. On senior night, George, the lone Mean Green senior, had her 10th double-double of the year with 17 points and 12 rebounds — 14 of her 17 points came in the second half.
With the win, North Texas locks up the 11th seed in the Conference USA Championship in Frisco, which begins March 11 in Frisco. They will face Charlotte in the first round.
"She was huge for us today and for all of us since she's been here," said Charlene Shepherd of George. "I'm a better player because of her."
Shepherd and George combined for 24 of UNT's 35 second half points. George was seven-of-eight from the field in the second half.
In the third quarter, UNT went on a 11-0 run fueled by seven points from Shepherd during the run.
"We had a lot of energy there in the third quarter," George said. "It was great to get this win in front of our home crowd and end the regular season with a win."
With the win, North Texas will enter the conference tournament having won three of its last four games.
North Texas reached the quarterfinals of the conference tournament last season and the semifinals two years before that.
"We're feeling really good," said head coach Jalie Mitchell. "This was a great way to finish the regular season and go into next week."
The Conference USA Championships begin March 11 from the Star in Frisco. Tickets to the C-USA Championship can be bought here.
