DENTON – North Texas student-athletes combined for a 3.46 grade point average in the 2020 spring semester, the best combined GPA for a semester since records have been kept.
Of the 350 student-athletes at UNT, 304 had a GPA of 3.0 or better in the spring, including 84 who had a perfect 4.0. The 3.46 GPA this spring combined with the 3.01 GPA in the fall of 2019 make this the most successful academic year on record for Mean Green student-athletes with a combined 3.21 GPA for the year.
"With as much adversity and fluidity as we had this spring with the Coronavirus and students having their world turned upside down midway through the semester, this was a remarkable semester," Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. "Our academic staff and coaches maintained a plan for success with remote learning, and I'm incredibly proud of our student-athletes as they stayed the course and finished the semester in exemplary fashion."
The women's golf team led the way for all teams with a combined GPA of 3.91. Every team improved their GPA from the fall semester, with men's basketball making the biggest jump from a 2.42 GPA in the fall to a 3.23 in the spring. The women's basketball team also made a big jump from a 2.73 GPA to a 3.39 GPA. The football team had its first semester ever with a combined GPA over 3.0, turning in a 3.19. Every team improved their GPA from the fall semester to the spring semester.
