NORMAN, Okla. – The North Texas women's golf team fired a program-record 281 in the opening round of The Schooner Fall Classic on Sunday and was sitting comfortably in second place before high winds of 50 mph-plus suspended play in the second round with the Mean Green through 13 holes.
The Mean Green were in second place after the opening round, which broke the previous record of 283 - set back in March in the final tournament of the season before COVID-19 suspended all NCAA sports. UNT won that tournament. The Mean Green also shot a 283 in the 2016-17 season. The record for low-36 holes is 582.
The field is loaded with premier programs, as there are seven teams that finished last season ranked in the top 50 of GolfStat's national poll, including No. 2 Texas.
"Honestly, the day could have been better," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "Our ladies lipped out more birdie putts than I have ever witnessed. The ball striking was impressive. We look forward to a good mindset tomorrow and will play one shot at a time."
Going into the 14th hole of Round 2, UNT is at 2-over par – good for a four-shot advantage over third-place TCU.
UNT was led in the first round by junior Audrey Tan's 1-under-par 69. Through 31 holes, Tan is tied for fifth at 2-under, while senior Lauren Cox and junior Katie Finley are tied for 12th at 2-over.
The second round will resume Monday at 8:30 a.m., with the final round set to begin at after the second round's conclusion.
"I'm pleased with our position after Day 1," Akers said. "Obviously, we are right where we want to be and in position to win the tournament."
