EL PASO – North Texas women's basketball travels to UTEP for contests Friday at 8 p.m. CST and Saturday at 5 p.m. inside the Don Haskins Center.
About the Mean Green
North Texas is undefeated in Conference USA play with sweeps over UAB and UTSA. Redshirt sophomore Quincy Noble leads the team in scoring at 20.0 points per game. Sophomore N'Yah Boyd averages 12.9 and dishes out team-best 4.2 assists. Redshirt senior Madison Townley posts 10.1 points along with a team-high 9.1 rebounds.
About the Miners
UTEP opened C-USA with a pair of wins versus Southern Miss before two losses at Rice to sit at 2-2. Preseason all-conference selection Katia Gallegos scores a team-high 16.4 points, while Destiny Thurman contributes 9.7, and DejaNae Roebuck adds 9.1. The Miners were picked to finish sixth in the league in the preseason poll.
History between UNT and UTEP
The Miners hold a 9-6 all-time advantage over the Mean Green with the first contest occurring during the 1980-81 season. Although UTEP has won six of the last 10, North Texas took the most recent meeting, a 68-58 win in Denton, to conclude last year's regular season.
Last meeting
DENTON (March 7, 2020) — The North Texas women's basketball team dominated the UTEP Miners in the second half to end the regular season with a 68-58 win at home Saturday.
Led by senior Anisha George, UNT (12-19, 6-12 C-USA) outscored UTEP by 11 in the second half by shooting 50 percent from the field. On senior night, George, the lone Mean Green senior, had her 10thdouble-double of the year with 17 points and 12 rebounds — 14 of her 17 points came in the second half.
Who's Undefeated
Only four Conference USA teams hold an unblemished record in the league standings with Rice (4-0), Middle Tennessee (4-0) and Charlotte (2-0) joining North Texas (4-0). That puts the Mean Green in good company as MTSU and Rice were picked 1-2 in the preseason poll and Charlotte came in fourth.
Townley Pulling 'Em Down
If there is a rebound to be grabbed, Madison Townley is your best bet. The redshirt senior recorded a career-high 21 boards in the win at UAB Jan. 1 for the fourth-highest total in program history and the top performance in Conference USA this year. Townley ranks seventh in C-USA with her 9.1 per contest and is second in offensive rebounds at 4.3.
Lee Coming Alive
Rochelle Lee earned her first two career starts for North Texas in the pair of wins at UAB and made the most of her time with averages of nine points, four rebounds, one block and one steal. In the victory over UTSA Jan. 9, the redshirt junior collected a career-high 11 rebounds.
A Noble Start
Quincy Noble has scored in double figures in every contest she has played at North Texas with a career-high 30 points coming at Louisiana Dec. 4. The redshirt sophomore guard recorded a game-high 26 points Jan. 8 against UTSA and knocked down six 3-pointers, the fourth-highest single game performance from beyond the arc in program history. Noble's 20.0 points per game ranks fourth in Conference USA. She is first in 3-point percentage (47.8) and second in 3-pointers made per game (3.56), which is the seventh-best mark in the nation.
Deep Improvement
The Mean Green struggled from the 3-point line last season by connecting on just 27.8 percent of their attempts, ranking them 300 of the 348 teams in NCAA Division I. So far in 2020-21, the team is hitting at a 38-percent clip to sit 20th in the nation and second in Conference USA.
Free Throws Woes
The Mean Green have had trouble at the line, ranking last in Conference USA at 62.4 percent. However, three main contributors from last year have made marked improvements since 2019-20. N'Yah Boyd went from 57-percent last season to now leading the team at 78-percent. Madison Townley went from 51 to 59-percent, and Jazion Jackson has gone up five percentage points.
Start of C-USA play
With the win at UAB Jan. 1, North Texas has earned victories in the past three Conference USA openers. Under head coach Jalie Mitchell, UNT is 4-2 all-time when beginning league play.
The Mean Green compiled a 3-0 Conference USA start for the first time in program history in 2018-19 and made it 4-0 with the wins over UTSA.
Non-con results
UNT finished non-conference play at 3-2 in 2020. Dating to the 2015-16 season, the beginning of head coach Jalie Mitchell's tenure, the Mean Green are 32-21 in games occurring before the start of C-USA competition. The team posted a mark of 6-7 in pre-conference play last season.
Last Mean Green Outing
