HOUSTON – North Texas track and field collected six individual titles from throwers Jaleisa Shaffer, Chris Samaniego and Haley Walker, along with distance runners Audrey Springer, Luke Canon and Caleb Bouchard at the H-Town Speed City Series Saturday inside Yeoman Fieldhouse.
"We competed well this weekend and with a little more swagger," director of track and field Carl Sheffield said. "We have been having very consistent and progressive training since our return from the holidays. I think it's beginning to show. Our team got fired up to compete against a perennial top-conference team in UTSA and also competitive regional American Conference schools Houston and Tulane."
Samaniego took first in weight throw with a personal-best toss of 18.06 meters and placed third in shot put with a mark of 15.40. Shaffer was the winner in shot put at 14.34 meters and earned fourth in weight throw at 15.36. Walker threw 17.23 meters for the weight throw crown as Ashlynn Smart placed third with a throw of 15.64.
"Our throws group continues to dominate with upperclassmen leadership," Sheffield said. "Jalesia Shaffer and Chris Samaniego continue to defeat the fields in the shot put, and Haley Walker and Ashlynn Smart get better each week in the weight throw. Samaniego is only the second in school history to mark over 18 meters in weight throw."
Springer clocked a career-best 5 :12.25 in the mile for top honors. Canon ran a 1:57.58 in the 800, and Bouchard was timed at a personal-best8:33.23 in the 3000-meter run with Matthew Morgan right behind him at 8:35.60.
"The distance group is also fighting their way back into contention. Battling youth and illness, they are starting to find bright spots," Sheffield said. "Almost all of the athletes we entered ran personal-best times or were within a second of improving. Caleb Bouchard and Matthew Morgan battled to a tight finish for first and second, respectively, in the 3k race, while Audrey Springer won the women's mile with an indoor personal best.
"I'm personally excited about the progress of the sprints group. Antonio Delacruz and Davonye Jones are running at their outdoor lifetime bests…indoors! Joseph Squire leads an auspicious men's hurdle crew up the performance list. The women's team is also building confidence as they pull together each week."
Delacruz and Jones each ran a 21.53 in the 200-meter dash for second place. Squire was the second finisher in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.05 seconds.
Bailey Ashmore was the runner-up in pole vault at a height of 3.70 meters, and Cody Bullard tied for second at 4.90 meters.
"Our jumpers and vaulters continue to improve each week and look forward to next week's light air and altitude at Texas Tech," Sheffield said.
The Mean Green compete in the Red Raider Invitational Jan. 23.
