Mean Green Drop Sam Houston State In Home Opener

DENTON - The Mean Green tennis team, led by juniors Lucie Devier and Maria Ponomareva, opened its home schedule on Sunday with a win over Sam Houston State, claiming a 4-1 victory at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green (1-2) jumped out to a quick lead after the doubles competition, when Nidhi Surapaneni and Devier cruised to a 6-1 win and shortly after they were joined by Ponomareva and Kexuan Zhou, who scored a 6-2 win to give UNT the doubles point.
Devier made quick work of her singles opponent with a 6-1, 6-0 victory, and Ponomareva followed with a 6-2, 6-1 win to put the Mean Green one win away from clinching the match.
"There was a lot of wind today, so usually people don't like it much and they complain, but I like playing in the wind because I like to slice and do drop shots and high balls," Devier said. "It was nice for me. I was feeling good today. In doubles, me and Nidhi killed it today. We had a good rhythm and just played really well."
The Mean Green wrapped up the victory with a 7-5, 6-2 win from Zhou.
"I love playing in front of my people I know, and they bring so much positive energy," Devier said about playing in her first home match as a member of the Mean Green. "It was the first for me, and I just loved it so much."

The Mean Green are back in action on Feb. 12, when they travel to Waco to take on No. 23 Baylor.
