WBB Off To Best Start In Nearly Four Decades

DENTON – North Texas women's basketball began conference play 4-0 for the first time in program history with a 76-52 win over UTSA Saturday inside The Super Pit.
UNT joined the Southland Conference before the 1983-84 season followed by the Big West (1996-2000), Sun Belt (2000-2013) and Conference USA (2013-present), making the four straight wins the best start in league play in 37 years.
"We defended better today," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "The rebound margin was a little larger, and we forced more turnovers. I feel like we were in control of the tempo."
Madison Townley scored a game-high 16 points, and Quincy Noble contributed 15. Rochelle Lee grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points. Jazion Jackson pieced together a complete game of 13 points, a game and career-tying eight assists, seven rebounds and a steal.
"Jaz plays the 1-4 for us. She does it all," Mitchell said. "We ask her to do a lot and she steps up, which says a lot for a sophomore. She's a great leader for us, and her best ball is still ahead of her."
The game held tight after the first quarter with the Mean Green (7-2, 4-0 C-USA) trailing UTSA (2-7, 0-4 C-USA), 18-17. North Texas closed the first half on an 11-2 run to take a 39-26 lead and outscored the Roadrunners in the final two quarters.
"We executed at both ends," Jackson said. "We've been having some great practices and working hard."
"We face some tough teams in a very competitive league," Mitchell said. "You have to show up and play. We see a great team in UTEP next week. It's a tough game every time we see them."
The Mean Green travel to El Paso for a Jan. 15-16 series.
