DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team moved to 2-0 on Thursday Night defeating the Howard Bison, 94-56. It was another historic offensive showcase by the Mean Green. UNT netted 14 3-pointers which broke the school record for most made in a game.
UNT jumped out to a 15-4 lead early and never looked back. Aly Gamez and Jazion Jackson brought it from behind the arc. The Mean Green scored 33 points in the first quarter for the second consecutive game.
The duo of Gamez and Jackson scorched the nets in the first half, both registering double figures. Quincy Noble added to the offensive prowess with 10 of her own, and more than half of those from downtown. The Mean Green took a commanding lead into the locker room, 53-31.
The Bison hung tough in the third despite North Texas going four-of-four from deep. UNT took over the fourth quarter outscoring Howard, 22-8 in the final 10 minutes of the game. 13 players scored for the Mean Green and played at least four minutes. Sophomore Tommisha Lampkin continues to impress, she posted 10 points and four rebounds all while holding down the paint.
It was another situation where UNT took care of business when it should have, the Mean Green trailed for only 17 seconds of the game. Gamez, Jackson, and Noble continue to cause issues for opponents, as they put up 54 points on 28 attempts, making nine 3-pointers collectively. Jackson hit three of them and set a new career high.
The last time North Texas put up back-to-back 90-point efforts was when Jalie Mitchell was a sophomore in 1999 against SMU and Columbia. The Mean Green will hit the road for the first time in the 2021-22 season. UNT will square off with Missouri State on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) on ESPN3.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MITCHELL
"It's good to be 2-0. That's what you want to do when you get a two-game home stand like we had. I felt it was important for our team to get both wins before we go on the road. I was excited about what I saw out there tonight. I thought we shot the ball well, and especially from the free throw line, which is an improvement from Tuesday. We just want to continue to trend in the right direction."
