DENTON, Texas -Â Jack Beaumont and Victor Neiva earned all-region honors as the North Texas men's and women's cross country teams placed eighth and 21st, respectively, Friday at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships in Waco, Texas.
"Our team had a tough day today as we sought to contend with a few teams who are currently slated to compete at the National Championships next week," head cross country coach Matt Layten said. "We had two of our top guys not make it to the end of the race, which set us back in today's team scoring. Jack and Victor had strong runs today, which led to their deserving recognition as All-Region athletes."
Â
Beaumont finished in 18th place individually with a 10,000-meter time of 31:26.6, while Neiva clocked a personal-best 31:44.3 to place 24th and give the Mean Green men's team two USTFCCCA All-Region honorees. The all-region awards will officially be announced on Nov. 18.
Â
Caleb Bouchard took 45th with a time of 32:27.1, Logan Mitchell placed 79th with a personal-best time of 33:16.3, and Matthew Morgan finished 110th with a time of 34:12.0 to round out the scoring for UNT. The Mean Green recorded 253 points for an eighth-place finish as a team.
Â
On the women's side, Erika Barrett led the way with a 6,000-meter time of 22:36.9 to finish 68th, followed by Gwyneth Garcia in 109th (23:26.6), Sophia Castro in 131st (23:59.2), Miranda Vreeland in 146th (24:33.2) and Jaden Reid in 166th (26:24.1). UNT scored 562 points for a 21st-place finish.
"Erika Barrett had a strong run leading our women's group, and her hard work has paid off over the past few months," Layten said. "We had a few of our first-year team members take some steps as athletes today. I'm looking forward to them continuing to put in the work in building our team training environment over the coming months, so that we can begin putting the pieces together to become a team that can move towards the top of conference and regional standings."
Â
With the cross country season in the books, the Mean Green shifts their focus to the indoor track & field season, which will begin Jan. 15 at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station, Texas.
"Overall, it was not the ending we wanted to have to what was otherwise a productive season," Layten said. "But we have a lot we need to work on with both the men's and women's teams if we are looking to meet the expectations we are now setting for ourselves as a program, which is to be a team that can contend for conference titles and berths to the National Championships in the coming years."
