UT Arlington Outlasts UNT in Overtime, 75-74
11/20/2021 6:57:00 PM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team fell in overtime, 75-74 on Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit. It took all of 45 minutes to decide the winner with 14 lead changes.
The Mean Green ran an excellent final set with less than five seconds to go for the victory in regulation. Jazion Jackson took the ball from the wing for a drive and kick to Quincy Noble, but a charge was called on Jackson. That forced the game to overtime.
In overtime, the two teams spent most of the period tied but with four seconds to go the Lady Mavs got the last look at the rim for the win. UT Arlington scrambled to get the ball in and then it was all-out defense for the Mean Green. UTA's Claire Chastain was able to create contact and draw the foul with 0.7 seconds to go. She missed the first but hit the second to put the final nail in the coffin for UNT.
The Lady Mavs just shot it better from deep making 38% on 21 attempts while holding North Texas to 26% on 23 shots from behind the arc. Aly Gamez, Jackson and Noble all reached double figures in the loss. Madison Townley pulled down a team-high 13 boards. Gamez just missed a double-double with 17 and eight in 42 minutes of action.
With the loss tonight, the Mean Green fall to (2-2). UNT will look to get right in the Cal Poly Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 26 squaring off with Montana State at 4:30 p.m. (CT) and St. Thomas at 2 p.m. (CT) the following day.
QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"I thought we improved in some areas that we talked about after the Missouri State game. Things like free throw shooting, taking care of the ball and winning the rebound battle. I thought when they needed a bucket, they got one whether it was on the original shot or the second chance at it. Down the stretch, they just made one more play than we did. Obviously in the end, that's something that cost us the game. We have to be better in those moments, when we need a stop or a bucket, we have to do that to win close games."
NOTES FROM THE UT ARLINGTON GAME
- Jackson registered double figures for the fourth consecutive contest.
- North Texas made 14 free throws on 18 attempts.
- Townley pulled down a team-high 13 boards.
- Gamez, Jackson, Tommisha Lampkin, Noble and Townley all started.
