Mean Green Head to Cali for Thanksgiving Classic
11/24/2021 9:31:00 AM | Women's Basketball
DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team will look to get back on track this weekend when they travel to California for the Cal Poly Thanksgiving Classic. The Mean Green just dropped two consecutive games by a combined score of seven points to Missouri State and UT Arlington.
The two-day tournament will consist of four teams, Cal Poly, Montana State, North Texas, and St. Thomas. The Mean Green bolster the best record out of any of the teams participating.
First things first, the Mean Green will play the Big Sky's Montana State (1-4) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (CT) at the Mott Athletics Center in San Luis Obispo. The Bobcats come into this game reeling a bit, losers of four straight. They most recently blew a 14-point lead to North Dakota, eventually falling 89-85. However, MSU has quite the talent in Darien White, the reigning Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year. She was named All-Conference in the Preseason Coaches' Poll this year.
The following day, UNT will square off with the St. Thomas Tommies (1-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m (CT). The Tommies out of Minnesota just recently joined Division-I in women's hoops. They have a storied tradition between the D-II and D-III ranks. The St. Thomas lineup features seven letter winners from a year ago.
Zac Babb will call both games on KNTU 88.7 FM and live stats will be available for fans to follow along. North Texas will return home to host SMU on Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. (CT) in the Super Pit.
QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"First of all, Thanksgiving is always a great time to reflect on our blessings and how grateful we are for the things we can sometimes take for granted. One thing we will never forget is how fortunate we are to learn, grow and compete with this group of women. On the basketball side of things, we will face two teams this week who will challenge us in multiple areas. As always, we plan to be better than our last game and return home 2-0 for the week. We'd also like to wish our Mean Green family a happy holiday. We'll see you back at the Super Pit on December 3rd!"
