DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team took care of business on Tuesday night in the regular season opener. The Mean Green defeated the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, 93-58.
The 93 points in the regular season opener was the highest ever mark at UNT.
North Texas jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter with five three-pointers. It was a balanced attack on the offensive end between the starters of Aly Gamez, Jazion Jackson, Quincy Noble, and Tommisha Lampkin. UNT led USAO 33-16 after the first quarter and never looked back.
The Mean Green scorched the nets in the first half, shooting 64% from the floor and 62.5% from behind the arc. UNT had three players in double figures at the break in Jackson, Noble, and Lampkin.
Head Coach Jalie Mitchell was able to empty the bench in the second half and see some of her newer and younger players in action. 12 of the 13 student-athletes that played entered the scoring column. LA Tech transfer, Amber Dixon scored 16 points in the game which tied Lampkin for a team high. Freshman Chloe Callahan got some good looks from deep and tallied up eight points.
All in all, North Texas did what it was supposed to do against USAO. They dominated on the court and on the stat sheet. The Mean Green pounded the paint for 48 points and the bench scored 44 altogether. It was a team effort from start to finish.
QUOTING HEAD COACH MITCHELL
"That is how you want to start a season. Amber and Tommisha were great in the minutes they played, they gave us great energy on the glass and finished well around the rim. As a unit, there's obviously things we need to work on. I thought we moved the ball well and shot it well from three also. The second half rebounding was huge for us which was something we talked about at half. It's always good to see those things come to fruition."
