DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team defeated LSU Shreveport Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit, 73-35.
UNT (4-3) outscored the Pilots 45-23 in the second-half and held them to just 22.8 percent shooting from the field for the entire game. Freshman Aaron Scott had his first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Rubin Jones led the way with 14 points and Thomas Bell chipped in 10 points.
LSUS was not the Mean Green's scheduled opponent 48 hours ago. UNT was supposed to host Nevada but due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Wolf Pack's program the game was unable to be played as scheduled.
Once the game was canceled, head coach Grant McCasland went to work in finding a replacement opponent.
"We're very thankful for LSU Shreveport and coach Kyle Blankenship for being able to get this game together quickly with us and make the trip," McCasland said. "It's not easy. So to be willing means a lot to us."
On Saturday North Texas struggled a bit early to get the shots to fall. They led just 13-9 after the first 12 minutes.
A 10-2 run to close out the half gave UNT separation at the break, which led their big second half. The Mean Green missed their first six 3-pointers on Saturday but finished the game making nine of its final 20 3-point attempts (45 percent). North Texas finished the game with a season-high 53 rebounds. It marks the most rebounds UNT has had in a game since Feb. 7, 2019 against Marshall when they finished with 55 rebounds in a 78-51 victory.
"We were a little tense to start," said Scott. "We didn't shoot the ball well but in the second half we really played as a team and gave great energy that helped lift us and play better. We played for each other."
Saturday's win was McCasland's 50th home victory as the Mean Green's head coach. Since taking over the program in 2017, McCasland has so far compiled a 50-17 record at home.
UNT will have a week off before they play again. The Mean Green will next face UMass at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth on Dec. 11. Tip-off with the Minutemen is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT.
