DENTON – The North Texas volleyball team finished with a season-high .297 attack percentage en route to a 3-0 sweep (28-26, 25-22, 26-24) over UT Arlington on Thursday night. The victory breaks a four-game skid for the Mean Green.
Rhett Robinson, who was hitting an efficient .364 through the first two sets, finished with 15 kills and four blocks. Freshman Truli Levy also had her best performance of the season, posting a career-high eight kills and .333 hitting percentage.
"This one felt good," Levy said. "It has been a tough week for us, but we knew that we were better than what we have been showing. This team has so much resiliency and fight. We've got to carry this into the weekend as we get back into conference play."
Barbara Martin tallied her fourth-straight match with double digit kills, as the senior outside hitter finished with 10 kills, eight digs and two aces. Kaliegh Skopal notched 38 assists in just three sets during the much-needed win for North Texas.
Aleeyah Galdeira rebounded from last weekend's performance with 15 digs and zero receiving errors. Martin also only had one receiving error despite the Mavericks targeting her on 31 serves.
"We made tremendous strides over the last two days," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "We played like a team that has been together, and our girls figured out what kind of effort it takes to win these hard-fought matches. I'm very proud of our team."
The Mean Green's victory on Thursday night was all about grit, as UNT faced several big deficits in the first and third set before coming-from-behind and winning each of those sets in thrilling fashion.
In the first set, North Texas faced a six-point deficit. Thanks to a couple UT Arlington errors and Robinson hitting her stride on the outside, the Mean Green rallied to tie the match at 19 apiece. After both teams traded set points, Martin's service ace capped a 3-0 Mean Green run as UNT won the opening set 29-27 to take a pivotal early lead in the match.
After never trailing in the second set, the Mean Green found themselves in a hole once again in set three. The Mavericks went on an 8-0 run to take a 17-9 lead. However, the set was far from over.
The Mean Green went on an 11-4 run to tie the set at 21 apiece. With the 108 people at the North Texas Volleyball Center on their feet, Skopal delivered two service aces to make it 23-21. After the Mavericks rallied to tie the match at 24-24, a Robinson kill and an attack error by UT Arlington gave North Texas an electrifying win in front of its home crowd.
The Mean Green (2-4) will jump back into C-USA play over the weekend as they travel to UTSA for a two-game series against the Roadrunners. The matches are slated for a 1 p.m. start time on both Sunday, Feb. 14 and Monday, Feb. 15.
