SAN ANTONIO – After moving its matches up a day due to current weather concerns, the North Texas volleyball team will now take on in-state rival UTSA on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.
About the Mean Green: North Texas will play its sixth match in 10 days when they take on the Roadrunners at the Convocation Center in San Antonio. The Mean Green (2-4) are coming off a 3-0 sweep over UT Arlington on Thursday night.
In that win, UNT set a season-high in attack percentage (.297) while also establishing season-lows in service errors (four) and service receptions (seven).
Rhett Robinson, who was hitting an efficient .364 through the first two sets, finished with 15 kills and four blocks. Freshman Truli Levy also had her best performance of the season, posting a career-high eight kills and .333 hitting percentage.
The Mean Green will also look to beat UTSA on the road for the first time since head coach Andrew Palileo arrived in 2013. While the Mean Green have been dominant against the Roadrunners at home with a 4-0 record, UNT has not won at the Convocation Center since 1995.
Mean Green leaders: Kaliegh Skopal leads the Mean Green with 193 assists in 2020-21, which ranks fourth in Conference USA. Robinson also ranks fourth in C-USA with 90 kills.
The middle blocker group has been the most consistent unit for the Mean Green in 2020-21. The unit consists of Sarah Haeussler, Miranda Youmans and Alysha Johnson. Through six matches, this group has 79 kills, 33 blocks and a .346 attack percentage - the best among any position group on the team.
Sarah Haeussler has dominated the opposition so far, posting 38 kills, 20.0 blocks and a .322 attack percentage. Alysha Johnson - although limited due to a non-COVID related illness - is third in Conference USA with a .460 hitting percentage.
Scouting the Roadrunners: UTSA (2-4, 0-0) is led by head coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff. The Roadrunners' two wins this season have come against Incarnate Word and UTRGV, while they have suffered losses to Texas State, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and SMU (twice).
UTSA has totaled 12.69 kills per set, hitting .215 as a team, averaging 11.73 assists, 1.5 aces, 16.2 digs and 1.5 blocks per set. The Roadrunners are led by Hunter Coppola's 75 kills on 251 attacks. Courtney Walters leads the team with 253 assists and Mia Ybarra already has 140 digs on the season.
Series history: UTSA leads the all-time series 19-12 dating back to the first meeting in 1979. The Mean Green have a winning record when they meet in Denton; however, UTSA has a commanding 12-2 lead when the two teams play in San Antonio. North Texas has not won at the Convocation Center since 1995.
The last time these two teams met up was in the first round of the 2019 Conference USA Tournament in Houston. UTSA defeated North Texas 3-1 to eliminate the Mean Green from postseason play in 2019.
Milestones to look for: Redshirt junior Henrianna Ibarra - who hails from San Antonio - needs one more dig to surpass 400 career digs in her 38th career appearance for the Mean Green. She sat out the 2018 and 2019 seasons due to ACL injuries, but she has gained substantial playing time for UNT in 2020-21.
Where to Watch: Both matches are currently scheduled to stream on C-USA TV (https://conferenceusa.com/watch/default.aspx?Live=13992).
Up Next: North Texas will play UTSA in the second game of its back-to-back on Sunday at 1 p.m.
