SAN ANTONIO – Despite leading in nearly every statistical category, the North Texas volleyball team lost to UTSA 1-3 on Sunday afternoon (22-25, 25-14, 21-25, 22-25).
Just hours after an exhilarating 3-2 victory over the Roadrunners, the Mean Green led the Roadrunners in kills (57-54), digs (83-75), blocks (8-6) and assists (56-53). However, UTSA went on several runs in crucial points of the third and fourth sets that eventually allowed the Roadrunners to topple UNT.
"It was a great fight between both teams, but we just didn't make the clutch plays when we needed to," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "Give credit to UTSA. They made some big plays in big moments."
Sarah Haeussler had an outstanding day for North Texas (3-5, 1-3 C-USA), amassing a career-high 18 kills, a .500 attack percentage and six blocks. This is the third match this season where Haeussler has recorded at least 10 kills and five blocks.
Kaliegh Skopal also came up big for the Mean Green with a season-high 49 assists while tying a career-high three block assists.
Barbara Martin recorded her third double-double of the season – second consecutive – with 16 kills and 15 digs. Rhett Robinson added 16 kills and a.270 hitting percentage on the afternoon.
After losing the first set, North Texas dominated set two thanks to several key digs by Aleeyah Galdeira and several crucial kills from Haeussler and Martin.
Just one night after posting a career-high 31 digs, Galdeira finished Sunday's match with another 27 digs in just four sets.
San Antonio-native Henrianna Ibarra also had a productive outing on the defensive side for the Mean Green with 12 digs.
After taking an early lead in both the third and fourth sets, the Mean Green watched UTSA go on several runs to take leads late in the sets. In the fourth and final set, North Texas had a 19-17 lead before UTSA went on an 8-3 run to take the final set and the match from UNT.
Up Next: The Mean Green host Texas State on Thursday, Feb. 18 at the North Texas Volleyball Center in a nonconference matchup.
