DENTON – The North Texas volleyball team will host Texas State in a nonconference tilt on Monday at 1 p.m. at the North Texas Volleyball Center. Below is what you need to know for tomorrow's afternoon match.
About the Mean Green: The Mean Green (3-5, 1-3) are looking to improve off a 2-1 week that saw a win over UT Arlington before splitting a C-USA series at UTSA. The Mean Green set several milestones as a team at UTSA.
During a thrilling five-set win in San Antonio, North Texas recorded 112 team digs, which tied a program-record for most team digs in a five-set match. The last time this happened in Mean Green volleyball history was in 2006 against FAU. North Texas also had 24 block assists in the win, which is the most since a Nov. 2019 matchup with UTSA.
The stout UNT defense also tallied 31 total blocks in its past three matches, which is the most in a three-game span since 2019. Junior middle blocker Sarah Haeussler has led the defense on the front row with a C-USA leading 35 blocks. She also ranks eigth in the league in kills (62) and attack percentage (.376).
Aleeyah Galdeira has been on a hot streak as of late, as the sophomore from Hawaii set a career-high with 31 digs in the win at UTSA. Thirty-one digs is the fifth-most digs in a single game in program history. Galdeira's 136 digs in 2020-21 also rank second in C-USA.
On the offensive side, Kaliegh Skopal is coming off her fourth career C-USA Setter of the Week accolade. In the last three matches, Skopal averaged 44.67 assists-per-match and 11.17 assists-per-set. She recorded a season-high 49 assists in a loss at UTSA.
Mean Green leaders: Rhett Robinson leads the team with 127 kills on the season, which ranks second in Conference USA. She is also averaging 3.97 kills-per-set, which ranks fourth out of the entire league.
Scouting the Bobcats: Texas State (25-2, 15-1 Sun Belt) is currently receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll after winning the Sun Belt Conference in the fall portion of the 2020-21 season. The Bobcats, who were up to No. 11 in the country, will make their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in April.
The Bobcats lead the country with 1,625 total digs, 1,367 total kills, 1,280 total assists, and 213.5 total blocks. Texas State is 10-0 in matches played on the road this season and enter Monday's match on a five-match winning streak.
Texas State's two losses this season have come at the hands of UTEP and UT Arlington, which are both teams the Bobcats turned around and beat in the 2020-21 season. The Mean Green beat UT Arlington on Feb. 13 and lost to UTEP in five sets in an exhibition game in the fall.
Series history: Texas State leads the all-time series 23-6 dating back to the first meeting in 1979. The Mean Green have a 2-9 record when they meet in Denton, but UNT is 1-1 at the North Texas Volleyball Center since head coach Andrew Palileo arrived in 2013.
The last time these two teams met up was at the North Texas Challenge during 2016. The Bobcats defeated the Mean Green at home 1-3 (17-25, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25) in 2016. Palileo and North Texas defeated Texas State in 2014 and 2015.
Milestones to look for: Galdeira is just 32 digs away from 500 career digs. The sophomore would become the fourth-fastest in program history to reach 500 digs.
Where to Watch: The match will be streamed on C-USA TV (https://conferenceusa.com/watch/default.aspx?Live=13756).
Up Next: North Texas will travel to Waco, Texas on Friday to face off with No. 6 Baylor at the Ferrell Center.
