DENTON – A Quincy Noble bucket gave North Texas women's basketball a one-point advantage with 22 seconds to play, but Marshall scored with four ticks remaining to hand the Mean Green a 56-55 loss on Senior Day Saturday inside The Super Pit.
Noble scored a game-high 13 points for UNT (12-5, 9-3 C-USA) while Rochelle Lee and N'Yah Boyd each contributed 12. Lee also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The team stats were nearly identical, but the Thundering Herd (7-9, 6-8 C-USA) won the battle on the boards, 41-35.
"This is a big lesson for us," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "I can't think back to the last game that we won the rebounds. That's been something that I feel like has been haunting us."
Marshall earned their largest lead of the game two minutes into the fourth quarter at 52-46. Two free throws from Tommisha Lampkin and a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Jazion Jackson pulled UNT to within a point at the 3:55 mark. The teams traded free throws as the Herd clung to a one-point advantage with one minute on the clock. Madison Townley drew a charge that led to Noble's go-ahead bucket, but Marshall grabbed two offensive boards and converted for the winning score.
"We've been making enough shots to seal the deal ,but today that didn't happen," Mitchell said. "In the huddle in that last timeout we talked about securing that board and giving one shot. We've got to have it. And we just didn't get it done. It's a learning lesson I hope, especially here at the end of our season where possessions matter."
The Mean Green will pick up their postponed series versus Rice Thursday at 7 p.m. inside The Super Pit and Saturday in Houston at 4 p.m.
