DENTON – The hope of a Conference USA West Division title for North Texas women's basketball was swiped away in a 64-58 loss to Rice Thursday night inside The Super Pit.
The Mean Green (12-6, 9-4 C-USA) needed to sweep the Owls (16-2, 12-1 C-USA) in this week's two-game series in order to clinch the divisional title and earn two byes into next week's conference tournament. Rice wrapped up the regular season divisional championship and will be the number-one seed in the west.
"I thought that when Rice needed a big shot, they made it," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "When people play Rice they get a little hesitant because of (Nancy) Mulkey down there. What I hope we took from tonight is that we still have to be aggressive, but we have to be smart about offensive rebounds when she's there at the rim. We have to kick it out and get a better shot."
Jazion Jackson scored a career and game-high 20 points along with a game-high six assists. Emma Villas-Gomis recorded a UNT career-high eight points, while Keira Neal added seven for her best scoring output at North Texas. Tommisha Lampkin grabbed a career and game-best 11 rebounds while contributing six points.
With four minutes to play in the contest and North Texas trailing 57-51, Destiny Brooks drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing, and Jackson then made two from the line to cut it to 57-56. However, the field goal by Brooks ended up being the final one for the Mean Green. Madison Townley kept it a one-point contest on a pair of free throws with 1:09 on the clock, but the Owls scored five points in the final 58 seconds.
The Mean Green took an early 5-2 lead from a N'Yah Boyd three and a Rochelle Lee bucket underneath. A pair of Rice 3-pointers handed over the lead at 19-10 with two minutes remaining in the quarter before Neal hit a shot from beyond the arc.
With North Texas trailing by six in the second quarter, Jackson made a jumper, and Lampkin went to work in the paint to earn a field goal and a pair of free throws to knot the game at 21 at the 6:32 mark. Jackson compiled two steals and converted them both into layups, and Villas-Gomis scored six to give the Mean Green a 31-25 advantage. The Owls closed the half with a free throw and fastbreak layup to pull within 31-28.
"I still like how hard we played," Mitchell said. "We will correct our mistakes and hopefully have a better outcome on Saturday."
