DENTON – After a week off from Conference USA opponents, the North Texas volleyball team will return to league play against UTEP on Sunday, Feb. 28 and Monday, March 1 at the North Texas Volleyball Center. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Below is what you need to know for these matches.
About the Mean Green: After defeating [RV] Texas State 3-0 on Monday, the Mean Green (4-6, 1-3) ran into a buzz saw on Friday night at No. 6 Baylor. The Bears, who went to the Final Four in 2019, swept the Mean Green at the Ferrell Center.
As North Texas transitions back into C-USA play, the Mean Green have a pivotal two-game stretch awaiting them against UTEP. UNT, who sits at 1-3 and in fifth place in the C-USA West Division, will be looking for two wins this weekend against the Miners.
North Texas outblocked Baylor on Friday night 9-7, with Rhett Robinson tying a season-high six total blocks. Sarah Haeussler, the leading blocker in C-USA, also added four blocks. The Mean Green have 80 blocks as a team this season, which is the second-most in C-USA behind Rice (81).
The UNT defense has been stellar in conference play so far this season. The Mean Green are first in C-USA with 16.88 digs-per-set in 17 total sets during league play. Sophomore libero Aleeyah Galdeira ranks third in Conference USA with 4.50 digs-per-set.
Mean Green leaders: Rhett Robinson continues to lead the team with 145 kills on the season, which ranks third in Conference USA. Kaliegh Skopal leads the Mean Green with 329 assists. Barbara Martin has been a steady senior force for the Mean Green in C-USA play, as her 3.47 kills-per-set and 3.24 digs-per-set both rank in the top 15 of C-USA.
Milestones to look for: Galdeira is just seven digs away from 500 career digs. The sophomore would become the fourth-fastest in program history to reach 500 digs.
Scouting the Miners: UTEP (4-3, 3-1 Big 12) has won three consecutive games to jump into second place of the C-USA West Division. The Miners rank first in Conference USA in aces (2.00 per set) and third in blocks (2.25).
Series history: North Texas leads the all-time series 11-8 dating back to the first meeting in 1981. The Mean Green are an impressive 7-2 against the Miners in Denton, 3-1 in El Paso and 1-5 at neutral sites. North Texas has won 10 of the last 12 meetings against UTEP, and head coach Andrew Palileo is 8-1 all-time against the Miners.
