WICHITA, KS – Despite battling back from numerous deficits, the Mean Green volleyball team fell to Wichita State 1-3 (20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 18-25) on Friday at Charles Koch Arena.
This was the Mean Green's second loss to the Shockers in as many days. Wichita State (5-0) hit a combined .263 as a team for the two matches, while North Texas managed just a .094 hitting percentage in its first two matches of the season.
During Friday's loss, service errors plagued North Texas, as the Mean Green finished with 14 mishaps from the service line.
"We just had too many errors," head coach Andrew Palileo said. "We've got to fix those, and we will. It was just really nice to get these two matches in and get our team up to game-speed. We got better this week."
Rhett Robinson led the Mean Green with 21 kills on 65 attacks, which ties a career-high in attacks with her performance against Tulsa as a freshman in 2018. Robinson added an additional 10 digs and two blocks.
Sophomore Aleeyah Galdeira had an impressive performance with 25 digs, just one short of a career-high 26. Senior setter Kaliegh Skopal finished with 41 assists, more than doubling her amount from opening night (17).
"Our passing was right on target today," Palileo said. "That allowed us to create a lot more offensive opportunities and a lot more quality chances than we had yesterday. We just played better today, and you could tell that we had a match under our belt. It all starts with the passing, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that today."
Junior middle blocker Sarah Haeussler also turned in five blocks and 10 kills with a .333 hitting percentage against the Shockers. Alysha Johnson finished with six kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
After dropping the first set, North Texas took control of the second set thanks to five kills from Barbara Martin. A Robinson kill put the Mean Green on a 5-0 run to go up 20-13. UNT endured a late rally from the Shockers before winning the second set 25-23 on a kill from Johnson.
Martin's five kills in the second set helped the senior from Celina, Texas finish with 11 kills and eight digs.
Wichita State won each of the last two sets 25-18 due to 14 attacking errors by the Mean Green and several service aces by the Shockers.
North Texas will have Saturday off before starting a three-game home stand on Sunday when they open Conference USA play at the North Texas Volleyball Center against UAB (1-2).
