DENTON — The North Texas men's basketball team beat Louisiana Tech Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit, 57-55.
UNT (10-6, 6-2) was led by James Reese who scored a game-high 12 points, had five rebounds, two steals and two assists. But the team's defense was the star of Saturday afternoon.
"We got stops and had more juice on defense," said Reese. "That and our bench is what won it for us."
North Texas jumped out to a 17-point lead over the Bulldogs (15-6, 8-4) but the highly talented LA Tech fought all the way back to pull within five points at halftime and took a three-point lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
With Javion Hamlet fouled out and big-man Abou Ousmane in foul trouble, UNT leaned on its bench to help them pull out the victory.
"The guys coming off the bench were big for us to start the game and especially late," Reece said. "We don't win this game without them."
UNT's bench scored 23 of its 57 points Saturday. Freshman Rubin Jones led the way for the group. The guard scored eight points but maybe the biggest single play he made was with 35 seconds remaining and the Mean Green up just three, he drew a charge to change possessions.
Fellow freshman Ousmane played a big role coming off the bench as well. As Zachary Simmons also got into foul trouble, Ousmane was called on. The Brooklyn native played a season-high 14 minutes, grabbed a season-high five rebounds and had a season-high three blocks.
Also making huge defensive plays off the bench was JJ Murray. The senior guard drew two offensive fouls, had a career high five rebounds and was diving all over the floor for UNT.
"JJ, Terence, Rubin and the whole group was the difference for us," Reese said. "We were able to get this win tonight because of them."
The Mean Green will be on the road next week as they travel to Southern Miss for a Friday and Saturday showdown.
